The trip to Baltimore was amazing!

The exhibit itself was also wonderful! There were a great number of maps that I have never seen before. I especially remember maps that were draw by Da Vinci and Tolkien, map of Japan, Russian map and earlier maps of USA. The other one which I liked the best was the map of characters from kid’s stories. I wish I had this map when I was a kid! It was so different and colorful!
Luckily, we also had some time to walk around the museum. The museum was very big, we could not see all of them. But we got a chance to see some pieces of art, icons and, of course, globes. I posted pictures of them, for people who did not get a chance to see them.

Despite the fact I enjoyed the trip and exhibit, I really expected it would be a bigger exhibit. The exhibit consisted of only 5-6 rooms. There also was a map that was made in Flash. Since we have spent the majority of the semester working in Flash, we can really appreciate the work that was put into the map. The map represented the civil war in USA. The animation was done soo nice and smooth, it made me jealous!

The trip was a great experience and it was nice to spend more time with my geographers friends!

For this lab I have selected to overlap 2 maps of Saint-Petersburg. One of them is from 1717 and the other one is from 1737. Both maps show only one area which is called Vasilievkij Island - one of the most historical part of the city. Since the maps are sooo old it was not possible to line them up perfectly, but I tried my best! Hope you like it!

Flip Book Animation Presentaion

What is Flip Book Animation:

A flipbook is a simple form of animation consisting of a sequence of drawings, or photographs, that when "flipped" through by the viewer appear to create the illusion of motion. This illusion is an optical phenomenon known as the persistence of vision. It is the result of the eye’s retina retaining an image for about 1/12 of a second. When successive images are shown at a faster rate, the eye will blend them together with the retina retaining one image as the second is superimposed over it. This creates the illusion of movement and is the fundamental principle involved in film and television recording and reproduction. Sound movies have been traditionally projected at 24 frames per second or faster making the illusion of movement very smooth. Maps represent spacial data including spacing, size, orientation and shape. Animated maps include these as well as duration, rate of change, order, display date, frequency and synchronization. The effectiveness of animation ultimately will depend on numerous factors including the symbology used, the level of interaction allowed, whether the user has expertise in the domain being mapped, and the user's past experience with animation. Things to consider when creating an animation:

1. Duration: length of time a frame is displayed, depending on its length, can be either smooth or choppy.

2. Rate of change: Equals m/d, where m is the magnitude of change, d is the duration of each frame. The smoothness is a function of the rate of change.

3. Order: sequence in which the frames are presented

4. Display date: the time some display change is indicated

5. Frequancy: number of identifiable states per unit time

6. Synchronization: temporal correspondence of two or more time series

How to apply in our class:

We all are just getting familiar with Flash and knowledge of using animation can be very useful. Flip book animation can be used to make your map more unique and get the attention of the audience. You can present change over time using animation which helps show spatial relationships.

This map is very artistic. It is not a great map from the geographic perspective of view, however it is not simply a map, it is “art and science”.

This map is great! It shows the train rail from Moscow to Dalnii Vostok and from Dalnii Vostok to Moscow. The map has days of week and local time included. Unfortunately the map is not date, however it has the name of the person who did it – Aldona Zabillo.

I have looked at all the profiles of my classmates on the blog, and I must admit – I admire Alan’s work. I really like several of his maps, but I would like to highlight 2 of them.

The map is nicely done; I just like looking at it! Colors are wisely selected and the legend looks well-thought and organized. The background is light grey, which highlight green (I would have never thought of it!). Just a well done map!

Lab #10 was challenging. I have tried different colors and layouts, this one looks best of all. The data I have selected represents the total popualation and percent of bachelor's degree ages 25+. I have shown the map to several friends, and all of them, to my relief, were able to read it properly. Now it is up to the main judge!

I hope you enjoy my color map of Percent of the Total Population Who Are 65 Years and Over. I have chosen orange -red colors since those are the colors that usually represent populations. In my opinion, my map on the web and my printed map can be interpreted differently, however, the web one looks better than the printed one. There are several reasons for this conclusion: the colors on the web copy look closer to each other and the steps of enhancing the color look reasonable; the font does not appear to distract the audience's attention from the map. However, the printed version's font looks too bright and its colors from the least to the most bright one does not look like they belong in the same family of colors. The orange color on the web copy attracts the most attention, yet on the printed one the red is most visible. The least enhanced color on the web looks off white, however, on the printed copy it appears yellow. On both maps you can identify six different classes, but the web copy is easier to look at.
